Maritime Volunteer Service - East Sussex Unit - Committals at Sea

The Maritime Volunteer Service training vessel East Sussex 1 carries

out a small number of committals at sea and also scattering of ashes.

The 17.5 metre steel vessel is one of only a few in the UK licensed by

DEFRA to carry out committals, which take place at a designated site

out in the Channel, some 7 miles off Newhaven, East Sussex.

MVS East Sussex Sovereign Harbour Unit carries out committals in

conjunction with undertakers in a caring and professional manner.

Anybody wishing to find out more is welcome to contact us.

Scattering of ashes can be carried out at any safe spot off the

coast and does not require the involvement of an undertaker.

Our Treasurer’s Daughter suggested the following quote by George Bruce, 1884, St. Andrews:

"The sea is the largest cemetery, and its slumbers sleep without a monument. All other graveyards show symbols of distinction between great and small, rich and poor: but in the ocean cemetery, the king, the clown, the prince and the peasant are alike, undistinguishable”.
